Grace Plus Nothing

Sharing the matchless grace of Jesus Christ

The Beginning of Wisdom

“The fool says in his heart, “’There is no God.’” Psalm 14:1

I have been working a few psalms into my morning devotional time.  I am intrigued by the gamut of emotions that the Psalmists express. Just the other morning Psalm 44 leaped from the page, especially this verse – “Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep?
Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.”  Psalm 44:3.  Wow, I know I have been frustrated and impatient before when I prayed for things to go a certain way, and I had to wait for an answer or things just didn’t work out like I wanted, but this is pushing it.  It’s like the Psalmist is saying , “Quit napping and get out of that recliner, and rescue us.”  (Hoping the Lord finds my analogy humorous.)

Then this morning Psalm 49 has a stern message to those who live for this life and material wealth.

People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish. (v.12) . . . .  do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—
    and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,
    who will never again see the light of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding
    are like the beasts that perish.”

There is not much I can add to this Psalm. Sometimes, we all need a reminder, that this world “ain’t it.”   This vapor will soon dissipate – as C.S. Lewis referred to our time here as living for the speck.  A speck of time in eternity.

I really have no desire to offend anyone, but I believe there is only one way, and one God.  To get there you first must believe there is more than just this life.  In his letter to the Philippians Paul writes,  “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2: 9-11).

We are all going to spend eternity somewhere, and will come before the Final Judge, when this life is done. Praying if you don’t know Jesus, that you will come to know Him and confess His name; and your eternity will be with Him. . .Enough said.
